Mission

Our mission is to revive the notion of mathematics as the Queen of Science and Industry. We do this by breaking the walls which have been erected between academic mathematics and other sciences and industries.

As math PhD’s working at a university, we are not only unaware that they posses amazing skills that are needed, but we also have no idea how to market those skills and to whom. Possible career paths are concealed from us during our graduate studies. Industrial companies on the other hand do not know anything about mathematicians, and why are they such valuable assets. They do not know, for example, that in many cases a mathematician is a better pick for a data science job than someone with a data science degree.

Because of these limitations, many mathematicians struggle navigating their careers so as to achieve a strong sense of purpose and meaning while also having stability and peace of mind. This is despite the fact that they are highly skilled individuals with years of hard intellectual labor under their belts.

Manifold Solutions podcast is focused on broadening the perspective on math careers. We interview mathematicians who work everywhere from banks and data science to bioinformatics and educational projects. They have not lost their identities as mathematicians but have acquired a sense of purpose and career stability. Some of them keep active contact to their former colleagues and continue research in pure math.

We are dedicated to infusing mathematicians’ careers with purpose. We advocate cross-pollination between academia and industry, and we fight the stigma that pure mathematics has to be confined to the walls of the mathematics department.

In our two-week course for math PhD’s (or equivalent) we provide practical guidance to ramping up your CV, how to prepare for an interview, and how to play the psychological inner game as a mathematician expanding their horizon.
